Does an hour of sleep matter?
1. binge (v./n.) 盡情享用 / 大吃大喝 / spending too much money (informal)
vi.
e.g. She likes binging on chocolate.
to go on a binge 飲酒行樂 / to have a binge 飲食無度
e.g. She went on occasional drinking binges.
e.g. He was so drunk after attending a binge party.
2. cut corners
e.g. Take your time, don’t cut corners and follow the instructions.
corner (n.) 困境
e.g., to be in a corner
e.g., to back or force or drive sb. into a corner
corner (v.)
corner sbd = force them into a place they cannot escape from
to be cornered (in sth.)
a cornered animal 困獸
e.g., Simon managed to corner this rising star for an interview.
Simon
to corner the market in sth.
Your mood’s going to be better, you’ll have better reason to engage and share ideas. It will also show on the outside – skimp on sleep and you may find yourself gaining weight and looking tired with bags under your eyes.
3. skimp (v.) + on 節省; 在…
e.g., To make your ends meet, you must skimp on your expenses.
= scrimp
e.g., Scrimping on safety measures can be a false economy.
4. bags under your eyes =
Bags of = heaps of (BrE informal)
e.g., You will see bags of food at the dinner tonight.
sth is in the bag = you are certain that you will get it or achieve it (informal)
e.g., I’ll get the nomination. It’s in the bag!
5. sluggish (adj.)
e.g. the heat made us sluggish.
e.g. after a sluggish start
e.g., I feel very sluggish.
6. mortality rate
e.g., All human beings are mortal.
致命的 = fatal
極大的; 極度的 e.g., When self-esteem is high, we lose our mortal fear of jealousy.
mortal 凡人 (n.)
e.g., She doesn't talk to ordinary mortals.
Kevin’s Classroom
corner
> Something is around the corner (round the corner in BrE) = it is very near
e.g., My new place is just around the corner.
> The four corners of the world = places that are a long way from each other (written)
e.g., Athletes came from the four corners of the earth to compete in the Olympics.
> in a (tight) corner = in a situation which is difficult to deal with and get out of = in a tight spot
e.g., The government is in a corner on foreign affairs.
A Song For You - “Sleepless Nights” by Eddie Vedder
Through the sleepless nights
I cry for you
And wonder who
Is kissing you
Oh, these sleepless nights
Will break my heart in two
Somehow through the days
I don't give in
I hide the tears
That wait within
Oh, but then through sleepless nights
I cry again
Why did you go? Why did you go?
Don't you know? Don't you know?
I need you
I keep hoping you'll come back to me
Oh, let it be
Please let it be
Oh, my love, please end
These sleepless nights for me
e.g. I've spent so many sleepless nights worrying about him.
e.g. Alone and sleepless, she stared miserably up at the ceiling.
e.g. My son nagged me so much for a new bike that eventually I gave in.
