MTR derailing

 

After working for 48 hours in an airless tunnel below Central MTR station removing the wreckage of a train crash, hundreds of exhausted rail staff covered in dust and sweat heaved a sigh of relief early on 20 March.

過百名港鐵職員連續48小時，在中環港鐵站密不透風的隧道內清理列車相撞後的殘骸。他們滿身是塵、大汗淋漓，終於在3月20日清早鬆一口氣。

 

exhausted 極其疲憊的；精疲力竭的 (adj.)

“Many of my colleagues were worried about how long it was taking to get the problem sorted. We were very tired waiting there in the stuffy tunnel. We were drenched with sweat and dirt. Nobody was in the mood to eat. We were just hoping to fix things as quickly as possible,” he said.

Inevitably, frontline staff bore the brunt of the public’s anger about the incident.

他說：「很多同事都擔心，不知問題何時才解決得到。我們在翳悶的隧道裡等得很累。我們渾身是汗和泥，沒有人有心情吃飯，只想盡快完成。」不過，前線人員無可避免地首當其衝，承受公眾對事件的憤怒。

 

stuffy (adj.)

LISTENING

Reporter: The rail operator now says it’ll suspend all testing of its new signalling system until the cause of the collision is found. It’s not clear if the signalling system was to blame, why the safety system didn’t activate to stop the trains, or it was due to human error.

 

be to blame 是…的原因
