Municipal solid waste charging 都市固體廢物收費

 

香港人多已是不爭的事實，連帶家居廢物也愈來愈多；人需要棲身之所，垃圾也要有個去處，可是，為免香港成為垃圾之城，源頭減廢才是良方！九月底，可持續發展委員會開展了有關廢物徵費的社會參與活動，名稱正是「減廢-收費-點計？」

 

例子：The Council for Sustainable Development launched a public engagement process titled "Waste Reduction by Waste Charging: How to Implement?"

 

廢物英文是 waste，尚有許多同義詞，英、美兩地用語略有不同，你有沒有發現呢？

 

trash, garbage (美式)  vs.  refuse, rubbish (英式多用)

 

Kevin 指他遇過不少學生把 garbage 第二個音節拉長，彷彿讀成 b-age ，正確讀音應為 /ˈɡɑː.bɪdʒ/ 或 /ˈɡɑːr.bɪdʒ /，第二音節較短促。至於英式常用的 refuse，跟表示「拒絕」的動詞串法一樣，重音卻不同！試試看，再跟 Kevin 和 Crystal 的示範比較比較吧！

 

Polluter Pays Principle 污者自付原則

 

一提到徵費，大家未必願意，但按污者自付原則處理，會不會合理一些？

 

例子：The Polluter Pays Principle recognises that the polluter should pay for any environmental damage created, not the general public.

 

levy 徵收

(verb 動詞)

 

交稅，英文會以pay 作動詞，例如 pay tax。不過，如果說政府徵收稅項，英文該用哪個動詞？就是 levy 了。譬如：

 

例子：The government levies a tax on the polluters.

 

levy 稅項/ 費用

(noun 名詞)

 

「稅項」和「費用」原來也可以用 levy！

 

例子：They imposed a five percent levy on alcohol.

(noun 名詞)

 

例子：This process aims to encourage stakeholders and the general public to participate in the development of feasible mechanisms to implement municipal solid waste (MSW) charging.

  • engage with 投入     = get involved with sth + feel connected with it

例子：He found it difficult to engage with hall life.

 

  • engage someone to do a job 正式聘請 (formal正式)

例子：After the internship, the company engaged him as a full time employee.

 

engaged 訂婚

(adjective 形容詞)

 

例子：They are engaged.

 

Engaged 還有另外一個用法，就是電話佔線打不通時，接線生會說：

 

(英式)　The telephone line is engaged.

(美式)　The telephone line is busy.

 

還有大家熟悉的場景──廁所：

 

(英式)　The public toilet is engaged.

(美式)　The public toilet is occupied.

 

engaging 惹人好感的    = pleasant, interesting, entertaining

(adjective 形容詞)

 

例子：His personality is very engaging with his warm smile.
