Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link delay

高鐵工程多番延誤,背後有什麼隱衷?

The much-heralded HK$67 billion high-speed railway linking Hong Kong with Guangzhou (the most expensive ever built per kilometre) has been delayed by up to two years due to "unforeseen difficulties". (摘自《南華早報》)

herald 公開稱讚

(verb 動詞)

例子:She has been heralded as one of the best singers in Hong Kong.

herald 預示…的發生

(verb 動詞) / (noun 名詞)

例子:The report heralds more freedom in the future.

Unforeseen vs. unforeseeable

A situation is 'unforseen' if people don't realise in advance that it will happen.
A situation is 'unforseeable' if it is impossible for people to realise in advance that it will happen.

例子:Due to unforeseen (or unforeseeable) circumstances, the event has been cancelled.

例子:Such a consequence is unforeseeable.

「無法預料的困難」包括什麼? What are the “unforeseen difficulties”?

The tunnel boring machine was seriously damaged and an investigation was looking into whether to repair it or to b the remaining tunnel by other means. Either way, construction of that part of the project would be prolonged by nine months.

investigate 深入調查

留意 investigate 是動詞,後面無須加 into。可是作名詞 investigation 時,則須加 into。

例子:An independent committee should be set up to investigate / look into the issue.

例子:The government should order an investigation (noun 名詞) into the issue.

tunnel boring machine 隧道鑽挖機

excavate 挖掘/開鑿

(verb 動詞)

= to dig a hole in the ground

► excavation (noun 名詞)

prolong 延長

(verb 動詞)

= extend = lengthen

prolongation 延長

(noun 名詞)

例子:A nine-month prolongation of the project may be needed.

批評 Criticism

The Corporation's monopoly on rail operations and construction in Hong Kong has led to the recent spate of problems in its projects and management. The rail company may think "it's too big to fail" and its performance can only be improved by introducing competition in Hong Kong's railway industry.

monopoly  壟斷

(noun 名詞)

spate (一)系列

(noun 名詞)

= series

有聽眾來信詢問下列句子應用 is 還是 are:
Telephone allowance and meal allowance ??? HKD100 and HKD50 respectively.

答案是:are

respectively = in a specifically stated order

如果句子主語以A and B 形式表示,則無論有沒有 respectively都要用眾數。

假如是A or B的話,就要用單數,即是is了。

例子一:David and Miranda are British and Australian respectively.

例子二:David and Miranda are, respectively, British and Australian.
