Shadow Education 影子教育

 

今集香港大學應用英語中心助理講師容煒灝（Kevin Yung）初次登場，也許你會覺得他似曾相識，原因無他，全因他曾擔任大型補習社的導師！由他來介紹「影子教育」，可謂順理成章。什麼是影子教育？請聽Kevin道來：

 

例子：The system of private supplementary tutoring is widely called Shadow Education because much of it mimics the mainstream education system.

 

supplementary 補充的／額外的 = extra

(adjective 形容詞)

 

Shadow一字可以是名詞、動詞甚至形容詞，意思各有不同，必須細心分辨才行！

 

shadow

(noun 名詞)

 

shadow 影子 (可數的 countable) vs.
shadow 陰暗處 (不可數的 uncountable)

 

例子：He is sitting in the shadow.

 

與shadow 有關的常用句：

 

  • without a shadow of (a) doubt 毫無疑問

 

Kevin 提醒，雖然without a shadow of a doubt詩意十足，可別濫用啊，否則文章千人一面，反而不美！

 

  • you are a shadow of your former self 比不上從前的自己

 

Shadow 也可比喻為形影不離的人。

 

例子：He is my shadow every minute.

 

shadow 覆蓋

例子：He is often shadowed by his brother’s popularity. (他常常活在他哥哥的陰影底下。)

例子：The intern shadowed the producer at that company.

 

foreshadow 設置懸念、埋下伏線

(英式英語，非正式British informal)

 

在英國，人們也會用swot來表示「臨急苦讀」；但用作動詞時，則指「書獃子」。
