Play deprivation

不少人慨嘆,當今的小孩子物質豐富,父母傾盡全力栽培,學習機會多的是,如果還投訴,就是身在福中不知福。於是乎,補習社總是擠擁,遊樂場卻愈來愈冷清。兒童沒有時間去玩,是誰之過?這個情況不只香港獨有,英國也有類似報道:

Lazy mothers are discouraging children from playing outside because it is easier to look after them inside.

孩子平日生活倚賴他人,父母也不放心讓他們四處跑,新一代「棉花孩」由是誕生!

cotton wool kids 棉花孩

Cotton wool kids 乃英國傳媒自鑄新詞,泛指過分受保護、脆弱的兒童。「脆弱」英文也可用 fragile 或者 vulnerable。

例子:A study has shown that a new generation of “cotton wool kids” spend fewer than three hours a week having fun outside.

為省工夫,有父母乾脆給孩子一部平板電腦,或者開著電視打發時間。爸爸媽媽一代喜歡的遊戲如騎單車、露營等都不復見。

例子:Childhood favourites like climbing trees, riding bikes and camping are being replaced by days playing computer games and being glued to the television.

being glued to 沉迷、寸步不離

(verb 動詞)

Glue 指膠水,原來也可用作動詞!被動式 be glued to 便指沉迷了,直接點說,正是「黐住部電視」!

例子:My son was glued to the TV when his favourite show was on.

The trend shows that many parents are even reluctant to let their offspring take part in activities they enjoyed when they were younger.

reluctant + to 不願意、不情願的

(adjective 形容詞)

= unwilling to

例子:Susie was reluctant to give up her seat on the bus.

offspring 下一代/後代

(noun 名詞)

留意 offspring 後不帶 s ,是offspring,不可數的名詞。

例子:Some parents think their offspring are geniuses.

play deprivation 遊戲時間不足(被剝奪)

例子:Play deprivation will affect the brain with the lack of stimulation.

deprive + of 被剝奪
(verb 動詞)

例子:His mother deprived him of playtime because he didn't finish his homework.

你可能會問,孩子玩少一會兒罷了,有什麼問題?研究結果值得大家深思:

Research shows that increased levels of anxiety, depression, attention-deficit disorders and obesity are linked to the lack of “free play” in homes, on school playgrounds and in neighborhood parks.

以下的病症,可能跟兒童缺乏遊戲有關:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) 注意力不足症
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) 注意力不足(過度活躍)症

= a condition where people are unable to concentrate on anyting for very long and so find it difficult to learn and often behave in inappropriate ways

deficit 赤字

(noun 名詞)

in deficit 缺乏

例子:With her big spending habits, she is always in deficit.

人生有起有落,透過在室外自由嬉戲,小朋友能打好面對順逆的基本功。

例子:By keeping their children indoors, many youngsters are growing up without the key skills vital for coping with the ups and downs of later life.

indoors 室內 vs.  outdoors 室外
(adverb 副詞)

ups and downs 起跌順逆

例子:Of course relationships will have its ups and downs
