Shark culling

 

海洋世界之遼闊深沉遠超我們所想，人們會到海灘游泳、燒烤、露營，卻渾然忘記，海始終是海洋生物的家鄉。

 

年初在澳洲發生好幾宗鯊魚襲擊人類事件，掀起了當地政府新一輪捕鯊行動。不過，減少鯊魚數量跟鯊魚襲擊人類的意慾不一定成正比；若是如此，捕鯊的理據該從何說起？

 

The Australian government thinks culling sharks will reduce shark attacks but there is no evidence to suggest so. Why do we continue to deride, dismiss and ignore science?

 

cull 撲殺

經典荷里活大片《大白鯊》成功抓住人們對鯊魚的恐懼。事實上，鯊魚有不同分類，例如：

 

  • Great White　大白鯊
  • Hammer Head　槌頭鯊
  • Nurse Shark　護士鯊
  • Tiger Shark　虎鯊
  • Whale shark　鯨鯊

 

Sharks, especially great white, are pure muscle and teeth: enormous, primitive, powerful beasts whose habitats we occasionally trespass in.

捕鯊割鰭有多殘忍？說著說著，Kevin 和 Crystal 都不禁搖頭嘆息：

 

Shark finning is the removal of shark's fin while the remainder of the living shark is discarded into the ocean. Unable to move effectively, they sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of suffocation or are eaten by predators.
