Sexual orientation discrimination

 

近期在香港牽起討論的同志運動,原來早在二戰後已經開始在歐洲和美國等地萌芽。作為平等機會委員會主席的周一嶽,可以為同志平權運動做些什麼?

Equal Opportunities Commission’s Dr. York Chow launches a study on discrimination faced by the LGBT community in HK and the feasibility of introducing legislation to outlaw discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity, and intersex status.

 

LGBT – Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender 同志

sexual orientation 性取向

= sexual preference of a partner; referring to a person’s sense of identity

例子:Heterosexual 異性戀的– man liking woman

例子:homosexual 同性戀的 – man liking man

例子:bisexual 雙性戀的 – person liking both man and woman

例子:asexual 性冷感的 – person lacking sexual attraction to others

 

gender identity 性別認同

(noun 名詞)

a person’s private sense of being a man or a woman

(some individuals don’t identify with the gender they are assigned to.)

 

gender stereotypes – conforming to social norms of concepts of the feminine and masculine

 

intersex – between the sexes

(noun 名詞)

例子:Mimi , a transgender, was not granted a legal marriage because of her intersex status.

 

Gay-rights activists have criticized the government for procrastinating on developing relevant laws.

 

procrastinate 拖延

(verb 動詞)

= to slow down or delay doing something because you don’t want to do it

 

例子:Many students like to procrastinate in getting their homework done.

 

procrastinator 拖延者

(noun 名詞)

例子:I am a procrastinator.  I like to work on last minute pressure.

 

同志行為在香港並無違法,但同性伴侶關係則不受法律認可。

Homosexuality is legal in HK and public opinion shows increased awareness about and tolerance for LGBT people.  However, there is no legal recognition of same-sex couples.

 

tolerance 包容

(noun 名詞)

= Willingness to accept feelings, habits, beliefs that are different from your own.

例子:We need to learn to be more tolerant and respect peoples sexual preferences.

 

tolerate 容忍

(verb 動詞)

例子: I can no longer tolerate the toddler’s screaming.

 

recognition 承認;認可;接受

(noun 名詞)

 

 recognize (transitive v.)

例子:Tommy recognized that he was wrong in accusing John.

例子:I recognize that person.  She used to be in my science class.
