政府於2003年推出個人遊計劃，「推出」的英文就是launch。Launch亦可用於火箭發射、船隻啟航等，如 launch a rocket、launch a ship。

 

例子：The Individual Visit Scheme was first launched in July, 2003.

 

 

mainlanders/mainland people 內地人士

(noun 名詞)

 

因為政治和社會的區別，遂有「內地」和「香港」之分。我們一般稱內地為Mainland，在Mainland後綴 –er，便指內地人士。

 

例子：With the introduction of the Individual Visit Scheme, mainlanders are allowed to visit Hong Kong on a travel basis.

 

 

relaxation of travel policy旅遊政策放寬

(noun 名詞)

 

政策有鬆有緊，何時放寬？何時收緊？一直是市民關心的議題，一點不能放鬆。英文裡，放寬和放鬆，卻可以同指一個字：relax。

 

例子：The relaxation of travel policy is indeed a measure introduced for the benefit of the mainland people.

 

可是，詞性的微妙分別足可令relax有不同意思，使用時必須留意啊！

  • relax (verb 動詞) 去放鬆

► I just want to sit down and relax (v.).

  • relaxed (adjective 形容詞) 感到放鬆

► I was lying on the beach and feeling relaxed (adj.).

  • relaxing (adjective 形容詞) 令人放鬆

► I spent a relaxing (adj.) evening at home.

 

multiple-entry permit 一簽多行

(noun 名詞)

 

Multiple有「多」的意思，這裡的multiple entry指多次進入。Permit就是我們常說的許可證。Permit用作動詞，就是容許、許可之意。

 

例子：The multiple-entry permit plan triggered a public outcry over concerns that Hong Kong would not be able to deal with such a large influx of main land visitors.

 

 

outcry against/about/over something 強烈抗議

(noun名詞)

 

面對不平事，人們大聲抗議自是平常。英文裡強烈抗議用上outcry一詞，捕捉了抗議者喊叫 (cry) 的神髓。下次除了opposition、protest 之外，不妨用用活靈活現的outcry！

 

例子：There has been a huge public outcry over the closure of the local hospital recently.

 

 

influx湧入、border crossings 邊境過關

(noun名詞)

 

例子：A large influx of tourists in the summer made the border crossings overcrowded.

 

 

cash cows 金牛、財源

(slang 俚語)

 

動物不單是寓言故事的常客，也在不同文化的俚語俗語中粉墨登場－－在香港，金牛不只代表港幣一千元，也泛指財源。無獨有偶，原來英文也有cash cows之說！

 

例子：Mainland visitors, who are big spenders (大豪客), are seen as cash cows in Hong Kong.

 

 

 

不少與金錢有關的片語動詞皆以cash開頭，譬如：

  • cash in 從中謀利

例子：The new law prevents people from cashing in by selling pirated copies.

  • cash something in 把…兌現

例子：Cash your travellers’ cheques in when you return.

  • cash up 計算收入

例子：The restaurant cashes up at 11 pm every day.
