Nepal earthquake

2014年4月1日,智利北部發生黎克特制8.2級地震,6人喪生。

2015年4月25日,尼泊爾發生黎克特制7.8級地震,超過7,000人身亡。

同是地震,相隔僅一年,但傷亡數字竟有如此差別,為什麼?Crystal和Kevin會跟大家略談地質原理,尋根究柢!

Chile's earthquake barely made the news, whilst Nepal's has brought complete and utter devastation. How did two such similar earthquakes have such disparate effects?

utter 完全的;十足的;極度的

(adjective 形容詞)

= absolute

例子: Francis looked at the score in utter amazement.

devastation 毀滅性的,破壞性極大的

(noun 名詞)

例子: The floods caused great devastation to the fishing village.

為何尼泊爾處於板塊碰撞帶,卻不容易察覺引發地震的斷層?

Nepal sits on a continental collision zone and its earthquake fault is well disguised: most of the fault is buried deep underground and surface ruptures are quickly covered by muds washed down by monsoon rains and the dense jungle.

collision 碰撞,相撞

(noun 名詞)

例子:Scientists fear a collision between stars.

> collision zone 板塊碰撞帶 (India is smashing into Asia)

disguise 偽裝

(verb 動詞)

例子: Halloween is a fun time to disguise yourself with a scary costume

rupture(使)破裂;(使)裂開;(使)斷裂

(noun 名詞 / verb 動詞)

上文為名詞用法,以下是用作動詞的例子:

例子: The street flooded with sewage water after the pipe ruptured.

在別的大陸板塊碰撞帶,裂開的斷層散佈於方圓成千公里的土地上,亦是一大惡夢:

Other countries in continental collision zones are underlain by a nightmare of widely dispersed faults, splintering across thousands of kilometres of land.

underlie 是…;對…有重大影響

(verb 動詞)

> underlain (past participle 過去分詞)

> underlay (simple past)

例子: The underlying reason for his rebellious behaviour is largely due to the neglect from his parents.

disperse (使)擴散,(使)散開,(使)分散

(verb 動詞)

例子:After the police sprayed tear gas, the protesters dispersed.

fault(地表的)斷層 / 裂縫

(noun 名詞)

例子:Earthquakes are caused by faults under the Earth's crust.

splinter 裂成碎片

(verb 動詞)

例子:Earthquakes cause large pieces of rock to splinter across the land.

Splinter 也指「摻刺」:

例子: Tommy got a splinter on his foot because he didn't wear shoes.

天災難擋,惟望國際社會正視地震災後重建之必要:

If nothing else the devastating earthquake in Nepal will hopefully highlight to the international community how vital it is to build earthquake resilience.

vital 必不可少的;極其重要的

(adjective 形容詞)

例子:It is vital that you tell your mom when you arrive at your friend's house.

resilience 復原力;適應力

(noun 名詞)

► resilient 復原力強的 (adjective 形容詞)

例子:Anna has a strong immune system so she is very resilient.
