Co-curriculum

常言道:死讀書,讀書死;課室以外,其實天大地大。如果由今天開始,課程要求同學們一定要選擇課外活動或實習以獲得學分,你又贊成嗎?

Skills development should be embedded in academic programmes, rather than an add-on, to give students the best chance of shaping their future.

embed

(verb 動詞)

1. 把…嵌入

例子:A bullet passed through the phone before embedding itself in a wall.

2. 深信﹐強烈感受〔思想﹑態度﹑感情等〕

例子:I think that hatred of the other is deeply embedded in our society.

add-on 附加物

(noun 名詞)

例子:CD-roms are sold as add-ons for this type of lap-top.

► add  {+ on} 加上

(verb 動詞)

例子:A 10% of service charge has been added on to the bill.

所謂 co-curricular,跟課外活動 (extra-curricular) 分別在哪裡?

co- = together

例子:co-worker, co-operate, co-produce

extra- = add-on

curricular 課程 (adjective 形容詞)

curricula (noun 名詞) – 眾數plural (also curriculums)

curriculum (noun 名詞) – 單數singular

學生究竟是主動的,還是被動的?

This is an approach that places the onus on students to shape and develop their studies and interests with life after university in mind.

當你說 the onus is on sbd to do sth,意思就是某人有責任做某事。Onus 解「責任」。

大學不是職業訓練所,但卻不時有僱主指畢業生對職場要求不了解:

Time and time again employers tell us that a degree alone is not indicative of a well-rounded graduate, so what can universities do to provide further development opportunities to complement the academic curriculum?

is/ are indicative of sth 顯示出; 指明; 表明; 象徵

例子:This behaviour is indicative of his whole attitude.  這種行為表明了他的整個態度。

► indicate

(verb 動詞)

例子:A degree alone does not indicate that the graduate is well-rounded.

 indication

(noun 名詞)

例子:A degree alone is not an indication of whether the graduate is well-rounded.

well-rounded  vs.  all-round

注意指人的才能「全面」應該是 well-rounded 或者 all-round,以下兩個都不對!

X all-rounded

X well-round

complement 補足物; 補充

(noun/ verb  名詞/ 動詞)

例子:A fine wine is a complement to a good meal .   美酒佳餚,相得益彰。

例子:A fine wine can complement a good meal .  美酒可以補足好菜。

► complementary

(adjective 形容詞)

例子:A fine wine is complementary to a good meal

Kevin 教室

complement vs. compliment

以上兩個字讀音相似,但compliment意思是「讚美」啊!

pay sb a compliment (tell someone that they look nice, have done something well, etc) 恭維某人; 讚美某人

► take sth as a compliment (=be pleased about what someone has said about you) 這麼說我很高興

例子:I’ll take that as a compliment.

► my compliments to sb 向…致意〔用於稱讚人〕

例子:This dish is delicious; my compliments to the chef !

shower sb with compliments (=praise someone very much) 對某人百般恭維

► return a compliment (=say something nice to someone after they have said something nice to you)  回敬〔別人的〕稱讚
