Transgender

 

除了「男」和「女」,性別認同的光譜比我們想像中還要闊。香港的跨性別人士面對什麼壓力?今集 English in News 跟大家仔細聆聽。

 

Trans refers to someone whose gender differs from the one they were born with, identifying as male or female or finding that neither label fits.

 

1. trans-

= travelling from one side to the other / moving from one group, thing, state, or place to another

 

It is a prefix occurring in loanwords from Latin (transcend; transfix); onthis model, used with the meanings “across,” “beyond,” “through,”“changing thoroughly,” “transverse,” in combination with elements of any origin:

 

例子:transform 改變(形態)

例子:transit

2. be born with     

> bear, bore, born (生)

 

例子:A plant bears flowers. (= produces)

例子:A woman bears a child. (old-fashioned) = gives birth to him/her

 

  • to bear sbd a child 為某人生孩子

例子:She bore her husband a daughter.

 

be born (past tense, passive voice)

 

例子:I was born and bred in Hong Kong. (bron + grew up)

 

born 天生的

(adjective 形容詞) 

 

例子:She was a born singer.

 

be born + with + a characteristic, disease, etc. [c.f. ask sbd to bear with you = you ask them to be patient]

 

例子:He was born with one lung.

例子:Trans were born with a gender that differs from the one they would like to identify as.

 

3. identify 辨認, 認出, 認為…等同 (verb 動詞)

例子:Police have identified one of the three suspects.

 

identify = discover

例子:Scientists claim to have identified natural substances with cancer-combating properties.

 

identify + as = distinguish from

例子:Trans may be identified as male or female, but they may find neither label fits.

 

identity + with

例子:Some people identify wealth with happiness. 有人認為財富就是幸福。

 

聯繫 to identify sth/sbd. with sth/sbd. 

= closely associated 把某事與某人聯繫起來

 

As well as dealing with prejudice, transgender people must also deal with the many physical and psychological issues. The process of changing from identifying as a boy to a girl, or vice versa, is called transitioning.

 

 

4. transition 過渡期; 過渡 (noun /verb 名詞 / 動詞) 

 

例子:in a state of transition 處於轉變狀態的

 

the transition from A to B = 從A到B的過渡

 

例子:The transition from one gender to another can be challenging. (n.)

例子:It can be challenging for a person to transition from one gender to another. (v.)

 

c.f. transit (n./adj.) = travelling 運輸

 

  • transit (adjective 形容詞)

例子:a transit system = transport system

 

  • in transit 運輸中 (noun 名詞)

例子:the rapid transit of goods 商品的快速運送

Q2: Why did the civilian people who claimed themselves to be police question Brenda in a threatening way?

Ans. They saw Brenda go into the female toilet but Brenda was not a female on her HKID.

reconcile

(verb 動詞)

 

1. 調和;調解;使一致

例子:How can you reconcile your fur coat with your love of animals?

 

2. 和解;和好;重歸於好

例子:They were finally reconciled with each other, after not speaking for nearly five years.
