Healthy recluse

 

「獨家村」，是「孤僻」、「不合群」的代名詞。

不過最近有研究發現，獨處對我們的專注力、創造力都大有幫助！

 

For those of us who just prefer plenty of alone time, emerging research suggests some good news: there are upsides to being reclusive – for both our work lives and our emotional well-being.

如果你喜歡花大量時間獨處，最新研究就帶來好消息：少和人接觸，有利我們的工作和情緒。
 

 

upside 優點；好處；有利的一面

(noun 名詞) 

 

例子：It's annoying that we can't travel until Thursday, but the upside is that tickets are cheaper then.

煩人的是我們要等到週四才能出發去旅行，但好處是到時票價會便宜些。

 

OPPOSITE  downside 不利的一面，不利因素 (noun 名詞)

例子：The downside of living here, of course, is that it is expensive.

reclusive 少和人接觸

 (adjective 形容詞) 

 

例子：While Stephen King is far from reclusive, he doesn't spend much time promoting his horror-filled novels.

史提芬京不算隱忍，但他沒花多少時間宣傳他的驚慄小說。

 

► recluse 獨行俠；隱士 (noun 名詞) /rɪˈkluːs/

例子：He is a millionaire recluse who refuses to give interviews.

他是個拒絕受訪的隱世百萬富翁。

 

Giving free rein to a wandering mind not only helps with focus in the long term but strengthens your sense of both yourself and others. Paradoxically, therefore, periods of solitude actually help when it comes time to socialise once more. And the occasional absence of focus ultimately helps concentration in the long run.

對自由自在的思想不加限制，長遠不但有助記憶，同時加強你對自身和別人的意識。吊詭地，獨處其實對社交生活有幫助。間中不集中精神，最終亦會提升集中力。

= the freedom to do, say, or feel what you want

 

例子：The young film-makers were given free rein to experiment with new themes and techniques.

例子：He deliberately gave his emotions free rein as he played the sonata.

演奏這首奏鳴曲時，他刻意使自己的感情盡情奔放。

 

paradoxically 吊詭地，矛盾地

(adverb 副詞) 

 

例子：The big thing in video equipment is, paradoxically, sound.

矛盾地，錄像器材最重要的是音效。

solitude 獨處，獨居 

(noun 名詞)

 

例子：a life of solitude 獨居的生活

 

例子：After months of solitude at sea it felt strange to be in company.

在海上獨居了幾個月之後，對有人陪伴感到有些不適應。

 

例子：It provides one with a chance to reflect on spiritual matters in solitude.

它爲人們提供了幽居獨處、玄思冥想的機會。

 

If your personality tends toward unsociability, you shouldn’t feel the need to change. As long as you have regular social contact, you are choosing solitude rather than being forced into it, you have at least a few good friends and your solitude is good for your well-being or productivity, there’s no point agonising over how to fit a square personality into a round hole.

如果你的性格比較不喜交際，你真的不需要改變。只要你有定期社交，你是選擇而非被迫獨處，你有幾個好朋友，而獨處對你的健康和生產力有利的話，就不需傷腦筋去強迫自己改變性格。
