new bundle of joy 新生兒

 

例子：Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, successfully gave birth to a new bundle of joy on July 22. The baby boy weighs 3.8kg and is named George Alexander Louis.

 

「新生兒」總令人充滿喜悅，說法也很多，譬如：

 

  • new born baby
  • tiny feet
  • new arrival      (這個跟商店裏的「新到貨品」一樣！)
  • grand debut    (舞台劇演員 Crystal 提提你：“debut” 也指「處女作」／「首次演出」啊！)

 

“Weigh” 三重奏：

 

weigh 重 ► to have a particular weight

(verb 動詞)

 

例子：The baby weighs 8.6 pounds.

 

例子：How much do you weigh?          

(不要說：“How heavy are you?” 為什麼？讓Danny告訴你！)

 

weigh 衡量

例子：We’d better weigh both choices before making our decision.  

 

weight 重量

(noun 名詞)

 

例子：The average weight of a baby at birth is around 7 pounds.

 

put on weight ► get fatter

lose weight ► get thinner

 

duke and duchess 公爵及公爵夫人

 

例子：The Duke of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cambridge have brought the Royal Family into the 21st century by announcing the arrival of their baby boy on twitter and facebook.

 

威廉王子及妻子凱特被封為劍橋公爵及公爵夫人，可是他們公佈小王子出生的方式卻非常貼近大眾，官方 Twitter 更搶先一步報喜：

例子：It was not until 8.48pm, 20 minutes after the message was posted on twitter, that the announcement was finally posted on the easel outside Buckingham Palace.

 

大部分西方國家雖已成為共和國，不過仍有不少貴族後裔，對他們的封號珍而重之。中國古有「公」、「侯」、「伯」、「子」、「男」，西方又怎麼說？

the throne 皇位、皇權

 

例子：Prince George of Cambridge is now third in line to the throne, right after his grandfather Prince Charles and his father Prince William.

 

in line to the throne 將繼承皇位 ► heir to the throne

 

讀 heir 字時，注意不須發 “h” 音，讀成 \’er\  (跟 air 同音) 便行！

 

例子：Prince Charles is next in line to the throne/ the heir to the throne. 

 

be on the throne 在位

 

例子：Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne for 61 years.

 

其實不少英文詞彙的同義詞源自不同文化，譬如：

  • emperor   (from French 法國)
  • monarch  (from Latin 拉丁)
