Smog

想知道smog是什麼?看看以下方程式便有分曉!

smog = smoke + fog

隨著內地工業發展日盛,空氣污染也愈加嚴重。霧鎖中華,外國傳媒亦有報道:

Some parts of China have been covered in a thick pall of smog, though Beijing's normally filthy air has been relatively clear.

pall 罩/蓋

(noun 名詞)

a thick pall of = a thick cloud of

pall 使乏味

(verb 動詞)

= become less interesting after a period of time

例子:I find his movies pall on me after a while.

cast a pall on/ over sth

(phrasal verb 片語動詞)

= make sth less enjoyable than it should be

例子:Her sudden death cast a pall over the awards ceremony.

不過,內地官媒卻樂觀得很:

Commentaries by two of the mainland's most influential news outlets suggested an ongoing air pollution crisis was not without a silver lining. They drew a withering reaction from internet users and other media.

Every cloud has a silver lining.
(idiom 慣用語)

Silver lining指銀色的邊,“Every cloud has a silver lining” 字面的意思就是每朵雲都有一條銀邊,比喻黑暗中總有一線光明,用來鼓勵別人。

例子:The fall in inflation is the silver lining of the prolonged recession.

withering 咄咄逼人的眼色

(adjective 形容詞)

wither 枯萎/憔悴

(verb 動詞)

例子:If you don't eat more, you're going to wither away.

空氣污染影響國民健康,後果可大可小,有內地傳媒卻發揮阿Q精神,試圖化悲為喜:

The commentaries tried to put a positive spin on the mainland's smog problem.

put a positive spin on sth

(phrasal verb 片語動詞)

= to twist a report or story to one's advantage; to interpret an event to make it seem favorable or beneficial to oneself or one's cause.

政治公關,人稱spin doctors,出處就是在此。

例子:The mayor tried to put a positive spin on the damaging polls.

有標題指:China's Extreme Smog Forces Pilots to Train for Blind Landings,霧霾之濃,甚至令航空公司決意訓練機師單靠儀錶著陸,即所謂「盲降」是也。

China’s notoriously congested airports are dealing this month with the onset of a particularly extreme bout of lung-choking pollution, which lowers visibility and contributes to airline troubles.

a bout of sth 一陣(不快的事)

= a short of during which it occurs a great deal

例子:The school had a bout of food poisoning from the canteen.

choking 令人窒息的

例子:If you eat too fast, you might choke.

lower visibility (=less visible, blurry)

例子:The fog was so dense that the road seemed blurry.
