The future of television

 

香港電視早前買下流動電視牌照，誰料通訊辦直指訊號入屋不合法，開台遙遙無期。另一邊廂，美國一齣網劇 House of Cards 大收旺場，令人不禁問：電視業的未來，將會如何？

 

'House of Cards' is the first major TV show to completely bypass the usual television ecosystem of networks and cable operators.  It’s also the first time that a series has released an entire season (thirteen episodes) all at once.

 

bypass 避開／繞…而行

(verb 動詞)

 

= sidestep (verb 動詞) = avoid (verb 動詞)

streaming video 串流影片

 

Stream 用作名詞解「河流」，動詞則指「流淌」，例如：

The onions made my eyes stream with tears .   洋葱使我的眼睛直流淚水。

 

傳送速度高的「串流影片」，也用到stream一字，寫作streaming video。

 

例子：The rise of streaming video has led to a drastic change in TV viewing habits.

 

shift 改變

emulate 跟風／模倣

(verb 動詞)

 

例子：If there’s any doubt about the venture’s success, competitors are already rushing to emulate it.

 

boon 恩物

(noun 名詞)

 

A blessing and a curse 有「祝福和詛咒」之意，也有boon and bane 的說法。Bane，就是災星的意思了，記憶力好的朋友，可能記得《蝙蝠俠》也有一個角色叫Bane！

 

例子："House of Cards" has been a boon for the streaming video company.

 

全季劇集一次過上網的做法，無疑鼓勵人們煲劇。「煲劇」英文可以怎麼說？Binge-watch 是也！

 

binge 放縱／狂熱

(verb 動詞)

 

= do sth too much (例子：binge-drinking 酗酒)  

 

例子：Web TV services encourage viewers to “binge-watch” when they make whole seasons of a show available at once.

 

總括來說，觀眾收看節目的習慣已經大大改變：

 

從前是：appointment-viewing TV      定時電視

現在是：video-on-demand                 視頻點播

 

不過，串流影片是否真的如某些分析員所說，對收費電視構成威脅？
But are streaming video services really the threat to pay TV that analysts are clamoring about?

 

cry wolf 狼來了／庸人自擾

(idiom 慣用語)

= cry or complain about something when nothing is really wrong

 

例子：Some people are sceptical of the impact web-based TV platforms will have on the cable industry, and say people are crying wolf.

 

relinquish 放棄

= give up power or control

 

例子：The real impact remains to be seen. "House of Cards" actor Kevin Spacey himself has jumped in to criticize the pay-TV industry, urging it to relinquish more control to viewers.
