Soil pollution in China

 

古人看風水,無非觀照人和環境的關係。今天污染橫行,連糧食的搖籃──泥土都不再安全之際,了解真實情況是當務之急:

Report on polluted land in China raises health fears
(Excerpt from Financial Times, April 19th)

One fifth of China's agricultural land is polluted, particularly in the country's southern rice basket. Soil pollution, with hazardous levels of cadmium, nickel, arsenic, lead, and mercury, is pronounced in the Yangtze and Pearl River Delta… The content of Cadmium - if ingested, can reduce mineral density in bone.

 

pollution 污染

environmental contamination 環境污染

 

例子: Environmental contamination is affecting our health and livelihoods.

例子:The factories released poisonous chemicals which contaminated the nearby water source.

 

hazardous 有害的

例子: Air pollution is very hazardous to our health.

 

pronounced 明顯的

例子:Amy, having just moved here from Australia, has a very pronounced Australian accent.

 

ingest 進食

(verb 動詞)

 

例子:There are increasing concerns about the quality of food we ingest today.

 

digest

 

1) 消化 (食物)

例子:We shouldn't jump after eating and wait for the food to digest.

 

2) 消化 (知識)

例子:Let me digest that article before giving some response.

Experts have called for more detailed analysis of the extent of soil pollution on the mainland to gauge its seriousness, after the government released its first findings from an eight year study.

 

analysis 分析

污染物落到水裡,肉眼還勉強可見;落在土裡,很多時真的不知不覺,更加難搞!

 

Of the three pollution problems - air, water and soil - soil is considered the hardest to tackle.

 

tackle 解決/ 應付

例子:It is difficult to tackle the problem if we don't have proof.

例子:In American football, you tackle the opponent by using your body weight to push him down.

 

intertwined 糾纏的

(adjective 形容詞)

 

例子:Those two trees are intertwined like lovers.
