西非伊波拉疫情未有減退跡象,國際醫療人員是否就此束手?

今集 English in News 將會跟大家審視病毒擴散高危因素,以作警惕!事情要由今個春天講起:

 

This spring in West Africa, a muttering emergence of Ebola virus turned explosive.

 
疫情主要在以下四個國家爆發:

  • Guinea幾內亞
  • Liberia利比里亞
  • Sierra Leone塞拉利昂
  • Nigeria尼日利亞
     

a muttering emergence 悄悄出現

 

► mutter 咕噥 / 低聲說

     (verb 動詞 / noun 名詞)

 

例子:“She is crazy!” He muttered to his friend.

 

explosive 爆炸性

(adjective 形容詞)

 

an explosive growth = a sudden rise/increase

= an outbreak 爆發

 

例子:The current Ebola outbreak triggers fear around the world.

 

伊波拉究竟是什麼?

Ebola is a viral illness of which the initial symptoms can include a sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain and a sore throat. (According to the World Health Organization (WHO))

 

其他病癥還包括:

  • vomiting 嘔吐
  • diarrhoea 腹瀉
  • internal and external bleeding 內外出血

= caused by virus

 

例子:viral disease, viral infection

 

The disease infects humans through close contact with infected animals. It then spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or organs, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments.

 

contaminated 受污染的

(adjective 形容詞)

 

不少醫院都擠滿了伊波拉病人:
 

Some hospitals and clinics have become choked with Ebola patients.

 

be choked with 擠滿了

= be full of = be packed with

 

► to choke someone 令人窒息死亡

  = strangle = to squeeze someone’s neck until they are dead

 

例子:The murder choked him with his tie.

 

不過,病毒未能遏止,極可能跟西非一帶的喪葬習慣有關:
 

Even funerals of Ebola victims can be a risk, if mourners have direct contact with the body of the deceased.

例子:A man who flew from Liberia to Lagos in July was quarantined on his arrival and later died of Ebola - the first case in Nigeria.

2. (verb 動詞) 使〔皮膚﹑肌肉等〕更強健,使更健康

例子:It tones your skin .   它使你的皮膚更加健康。


tune [tju:n]

= melody

 

1. (noun 名詞) 歌曲,旋律,心情


2. (verb 動詞) 調節,和諧

例子:to tune a musical instrument

= to adjust it so that it produces the right notes
