Cool kids are at the bookstores

當今潮人去哪兒?不是商場,也不是夜店,而是書店!

Crystal 郭錦恩今集為大家帶來寶島情報,想想我們平日消遣可以有什麼另類選擇。

At a time when many bookstores in the United States are struggling in the face of an onslaught from the online retailer Amazon, Eslite is thriving.

in the face of 面臨

例子:Johnny stayed strong even in the face of such danger.

onslaught 猛攻

(noun 名詞)

例子:The massive onslaught of online purchasing is great for consumers but has wiped out many businesses.

thrive 茁壯成長;興旺,繁榮

(verb 動詞)

例子:The kids are thriving in their new environment.

誠品書店又名Eslite,出自古法語,英文是elite,意即「精英」。

這家店的規距可特別了:

Open 24 hrs. Bookstore policy: Stay as long as you want, read as much as you want, just don't spill coffee on the books.  Catnaps are fine.  No purchase necessary.

catnap  小睡,打盹

(noun 名詞)

Crystal點出一個有趣句法:you can…just… ,就是「你可以…只是…」的意思。

例子:You can do this...you can do that...just don't spend all the money/ just don't tell anyone/ just remember to lock the door.

不過,在台灣行得通那一套,似乎在香港卻不太通用:

Hong Kong store opened in 2012 initially stayed open for 24 hours but quickly moved away from that format. Company's founder says, "Running a bookstore in HK requires a little more shrewdness and a little less romance."

shrewdness 精明

(noun 名詞)

► shrewd 精明的

(adjective 形容詞)

例子:Julie's shrewdness led to many wise investments.

書店的成功之道,跟台灣人性格大有關係:

The romance is in Taiwan.  People in Taipei crave the human interactions that can happen at bookstores, something that might be absent in office environments.

crave 渴望,熱望;難以抑制的渴求

(verb 動詞)

= yearn for, hungry for

例子:The pregnant lady was craving for pickles in the middle of the night.

interaction 互動

(noun 名詞)

例子:Their friendly interaction led to very harmonious relationship.

Crystal’s slang time

  • no point crying over spilled milk 事已至此無謂傷心 (saying 俗語)
  • take a spill(通常指從腳踏車或馬上)摔下,跌下 (informal 非正式說法)
