誠品書店又名Eslite，出自古法語，英文是elite，意即「精英」。

這家店的規距可特別了：

 

Open 24 hrs. Bookstore policy: Stay as long as you want, read as much as you want, just don't spill coffee on the books.  Catnaps are fine.  No purchase necessary.

Crystal點出一個有趣句法：you can…just… ，就是「你可以…只是…」的意思。

例子：You can do this...you can do that...just don't spend all the money/ just don't tell anyone/ just remember to lock the door.

 

不過，在台灣行得通那一套，似乎在香港卻不太通用：

 

Hong Kong store opened in 2012 initially stayed open for 24 hours but quickly moved away from that format. Company's founder says, "Running a bookstore in HK requires a little more shrewdness and a little less romance."

書店的成功之道，跟台灣人性格大有關係：

 

The romance is in Taiwan.  People in Taipei crave the human interactions that can happen at bookstores, something that might be absent in office environments.

= yearn for, hungry for

 

例子：The pregnant lady was craving for pickles in the middle of the night.

例子：Their friendly interaction led to very harmonious relationship.

一個"spill"字，在日常用語中非常常見！

 

  • spill the beans 洩漏秘密 (idiom 慣用語)
  • no point crying over spilled milk 事已至此無謂傷心 (saying 俗語)
  • take a spill（通常指從腳踏車或馬上）摔下，跌下 (informal 非正式說法)
