最新一屆立法會投票創新高，到底給我們什麼啟示？

不少傘後組織及社運人獲選，反而好些多次連任的泛民議員出局，會否為立法會帶來新氣象？

 

Hong Kong’s voters have signalled a strong demand for political change and a say in the city’s future, installing in the legislature a new generation of activists who cut their teeth on the 2014 Occupy protests, and sidelining veteran pan-democrats who disappointed them.

 

signal 信號
(noun 名詞)

例子：When she gave the signal, they all cheered.
她發出信號後，他們都歡呼起來。

例子：The signal for a race to start is often the firing of a gun.
賽跑常以發令槍響作爲開始的信號

 

電腦常用字必定包括  install，在此有不一樣的意思：

install
(verb 動詞)

1. 安裝

例子：The plumber is coming tomorrow to install the new washing machine.
水管工明天來安裝新的洗衣機。

2. 正式任命

例子：He has installed a couple of young academics as her advisers.
他任用幾名年輕的大學教師作為顧問。

 

generation （社會或家庭的）一代（人），同代人，同輩人
(noun 名詞)

例子：The younger generation smokes less than their parents did.
年輕一代比他們父母這代人少吸煙。

例子：This painting has been in the family for generations.
這幅畫已被該家族收藏了數代之久。

 

activist 激進主義分子，行動主義分子；積極分子
(noun 名詞)

activisit不一定激進，但一定積極，熱心提倡他們的主張。

例子：He's been a trade union/party activist for many years.
他多年來都是工會／黨的積極分子。


cut their teeth 初試啼聲
例子：The brothers cut their professional teeth at a fast food store before starting their own restaurant.

 

sideline
(noun 名詞)

1. 副業，兼職工作

例子：Peter works in a bank, but teaches French in the evenings as a sideline.
彼德在銀行工作，晚上兼職教法語。

2. （尤指欖球場上的）邊線

例子：The ball fell just inside/on/outside the sideline.
球正好落在了邊線內／上／外。

 

除了以上意思，文中sideline其實有「被排除在外」的意味。

 

veteran
(noun 名詞)

1. 經驗豐富的人，老手

例子：He is 30-year veteran of the New York Police Department.
他是位在紐約警署任職30年的老警員。

2. 老兵，退伍軍人

例子：a Vietnam veteran 越戰退伍軍人
