1. words of wisdom 人生格言/至理名言

 

► the conventional wisdom 一般常識/傳統觀念

例子:The conventional wisdom was that in fast-growing Asia, companies should invest.

一般認為,快速成長的亞洲,值得企業投資。

 

The most important thing is to take that first step. While your goals may seem daunting or too big to be achieved, just staring it down won’t do a thing.

最重要是踏出第一步。你的目標或許看似使人卻步,或者大得難以實現,但一味看著它是沒用的。

2. daunting = intimidating 令人卻步的;使人氣餒的 (adjective 形容詞)

 

例子:They were faced with many daunting tasks. 他們面對許多令人卻步的任務。

例子:It is daunting to think/read that ... 想起/讀到…就感到氣餒

 

3. stare someone down/out 逼視某人直至他不敢對視下去; 以目光震懾某人

 

例子:John glared at May but May’s boyfriend stared John down with hard, pebble-like eyes.           

John 望著 May,但May的男友雙目圓睜,以凌厲的目光逼視John。

 

It doesn’t matter if you end up pursuing a major that has to do with computer science. Coding skills, technology skills, programming skills – these are skills that are so, so important to every field of work that you could possibly pursue in the future.

即使你最後主修計算機科學相關的科目也不打緊。無論你未來投身什麼行業,寫程式等技巧實在非常、非常重要。

4. (have to) do with = concerning; related to 關於;有關

 

例子:His regular attendance in the reference library had nothing to do with the pursuit of verisimilitude 貌似真實 in his fictions.  

他經常上圖書館,但這和他追求創作富實感的小說,兩者並無關係。

 

5. pursue (v.) vs pursuit (n.)

 

in hot pursuit of sbd = chasing after sbd with great determination

 

例子:The gang drove off, with the police in hot pursuit.

幫會成員駕車離去,警察緊隨在後。

 

If the plan doesn't work, change the plan. Not the goal. ​Learn to adapt to a situation and how to improve your vision from there.

如果計劃行不通,那就改變計劃,而不是目標。學習隨遇而安,改變你的眼光。

6. adapt = adjust/modify ≠ adopt 適應 (verb 動詞)

 

例子:The world is changing fast and we will have to be prepared to adapt to the change.

世界轉變急促,我們必須做好準備,適應變化。

 

While solving problems, you will continue to encounter failures. Accept them, but persist with the problem. Do not give up, and always remember the bigger goal of making a difference.

解決問題的過程中,你會一直遇到挫折。接受它們,但要堅持不懈地解決問題。不要放棄,毋忘「帶來改變」的初衷。

7. persist / persist in doing sth 堅持 (verb 動詞)

 

例子:She knows how much this upsets her friend but she persists in doing it.

她知道這樣做會令朋友非常傷心,但她堅持要做。

 

例子:“You haven’t answered me,” he persisted. 「你還未答我。」他執意要知道。

 

Every time I do something scientific or geeky, I have fun with it. But I personally want to show that science can be fun.

每次我做一些科學的或者「毒毒地」的事,我覺得很好玩。我自己也很想證明給大家看,科學可以很帶趣。

8. geeky 土頭土腦的,無趣的/薯嘜/書蟲/「毒毒地」但精通某事 (adjective 形容詞)

= nerdy
