林肯是第十六任美國總統，1861年3月就任，4年後遇刺身亡。在他任內，美國經歷了歷史上最為慘烈的戰爭，以及最為嚴重的道德、憲政和政治危機——南北戰爭。經此一役，他維護了聯邦的完整、廢除了奴隸制、增強了聯邦政府的權力，也推動了經濟現代化；因此美國學界和公眾時常稱林肯為美國史上最偉大總統之一。
